FRCS Urology Revision: Final Week Advice From a Recent Candidate

If you are one week away from the FRCS (Urol) Part 1 exam, you are probably experiencing the most difficult phase of preparation. Not because you suddenly don’t know the material—but because the pressure now feels real.

As someone who has recently sat the FRCS Urology exam, I remember this final week clearly: the nerves, the constant self-doubt, and that persistent question of “Have I actually done enough?” Even after months of revision, it never truly felt like enough.

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. In fact, it is something almost every urology trainee goes through in the final stretch of exam preparation.

Feeling Unprepared Is Normal in FRCS Urology Revision

One of the biggest lessons I learned during my own FRCS Urology preparation is that readiness rarely feels comfortable. You don’t suddenly wake up in the final week feeling “exam-ready.” But if you have been consistently revising, practising questions, reviewing mistakes, and returning to weak areas, you are far more prepared than you probably realise.

This final week is not about trying to relearn the entire syllabus. It is about focusing your effort where it matters most.

What Actually Helped Me in the Final Week

When I reflect on what made the biggest difference during the last seven days before the exam, four things stand out:

1. Practising Under Real Exam Conditions

Doing timed questions helped me build rhythm, manage pace, and reduce anxiety on the day. Sitting full-length mocks made the exam feel familiar rather than intimidating.

2. Targeting Weak Areas

Rather than revising everything equally, I focused on topics I was consistently getting wrong. This is where the biggest gains are made in FRCS (Urol) revision.

3. Understanding Explanations, Not Just Answers

Reading why an answer was correct or incorrect helped solidify concepts and avoid repeating mistakes—something that is essential for a knowledge-heavy exam like FRCS.

4. Protecting My Energy

Sleep, short breaks, and mental clarity mattered more than another exhausted hour of revision. A clear head is one of the most underrated tools in exam performance.

Why I Built SmashUrology

These experiences are exactly why I created SmashUrology.

While preparing for the exam myself, I felt there was a gap in urology education: a need for a modern, focused, exam-driven learning platform that prioritised what actually helps trainees succeed. Not endless resources. Not unnecessary complexity. Just high-yield, exam-mapped content.

SmashUrology was built to provide:

  • A urology question bank aligned to FRCS exam requirements

  • Clear, concise explanations that reinforce learning

  • Tools to identify weak areas and revise efficiently

It was designed by someone who had sat the exam, for others who are preparing to do the same.

Seeing trainees now using the platform so intensively—answering thousands of questions, refining details, and closing knowledge gaps—has been incredibly motivating. It reinforces the same principle I learned: smart, focused practice works.

What to Remember in the Final Week Before FRCS (Urol)

If you are sitting the exam soon, here is the most important message I can share:

  • Keep your revision targeted.

  • Trust the work you have already done.

  • Be kind to yourself.

  • And remember that feeling nervous does not mean you are unprepared—it means this exam matters to you.

Preparing for FRCS Urology is a major achievement in itself. It reflects years of training, discipline, and perseverance. If you have approached it thoughtfully and systematically, that effort will show.

From someone who has been there: you have done more than you think.

Finish strong.
